Columnea crassifolia

GenerlaitŠ°

This genus groups about 150 species of evergreen epiphytic perennial herbaceous plants, originating in Central and South America. The most cultivated species have a hanging or climbing habit; the leaves are oval, opposite, of a bright green color, often covered with a thin white hair. In spring they produce a profusion of small solitary flowers, of tubular form, in all the shades of yellow and red, which bloom at the leaf armpit.
Columnea crassifolia is a very particular variety, originating in Guatemala and Mexico, which is cultivated for the beauty of its flowers, which are red orange, very decorative.

Exposure

The Columnea crassifolia prefers luminous positions, but far from the direct rays of the sun; in summer it can be placed outside, in a shady and sheltered from the wind. The columnee are very cold, so in winter they should be placed indoors, in a bright place.
This kind of plants does not tolerate low temperatures, in fact it is good that they do not fall below 15 ° C. While the ideal temperature is around 25 ° C.

Watering

In the period from March to October water regularly, trying to always keep the soil slightly damp, but not soaked with water, as the Columnea crassifolia does not like the water stagnation that can cause dangerous root rot. In winter supply water very rarely, every 15-20 days, to prevent the plant from drying out. In the vegetative period, provide fertilizer for flowering plants every 15-20 days, mixed with the water used for watering.

Columnea crassifolia fears the attack of aphids, cochineal and whitefly. There are special insecticide products on the market that can be used successfully to solve the problem; if the attack of the cochineal is contained, it is also possible to intervene manually to eliminate the parasites by means of a cotton pad with alcohol.
If over-watered and poorly fertilized it can be affected by gray mold, root rot and ferric chlorosis. If mold is noted it is necessary to promptly eliminate the damaged parts and use a specific anticryptogamic product.
