Alstroemeria is a small shrub-like plant, perennial, evergreen, native to the mountainous areas of South America. From its tuberous roots thin erect stems develop, quite rigid, scarcely branched, reaching 60-100 cm in height; the foliage is green, not very dense, the long leaves are alternate, rigid, pointed, often the lower page is turned upwards. In late spring and during the summer the plants of alstroemeria aurantiaca produce numerous small flowers, at the apex of the stems, of pink or yellow color; there are many hybrids, with more varied colors, even red, purple or orange. The flowers of alstroemeria they are similar to small lilies, and generally have brown spots or streaks on the petals. They are very appreciated as cut flowers, in pots they can remain flowered even for a couple of weeks.

Place the Peruvian lily in a sunny or partially shaded place, sheltered from the wind; in general they can withstand temperatures close to -4 / -5 ° C, in places with very cold winters it is therefore good to grow astroemeries in a container, so that they can be sheltered from the cold during the cold season.

From March to September, regularly water the als, leaving the soil to dry between one watering and another. Generally they can withstand short periods of drought, but better flowering is achieved with regular watering. During the vegetative period, provide fertilizer for flowering plants with the Peruvian lily, dissolved in the water used for watering, every 15-20 days.

Peruvian lily plants need a rich, loose, very well drained soil. Before planting them, enrich the soil with mature organic fertilizer and lighten it with washed river sand. The specimens grown in container are repotted in autumn, every 4-5 years.

The multiplication of the Alstroemeria aurantiaca occurs by seed, at the end of winter, before being buried the seeds must spend at least 2-3 weeks in a cold place in order to germinate, it is therefore advisable to place the seeds on the sowing substrate, insert the containers in bags plastic and keep them in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks. In autumn it is possible to divide the fleshy rhizomes, taking care to maintain at least a couple of well-developed roots for each portion produced.

Pests and diseases

The plants of aurantiaca alstroemeria are often attacked by aphids and mites. They fear gray mold and mildew.

Alstroemeria: Alstromeria in vase

Alstromerie can be grown both on the ground and in pots. The cultivation invaded by great results and allows us to exploit this plant in its periods of maximum beauty. In fact, when the alsomery blooms, the vase can be put in plain sight in the home while when the plant fades you can move the vase and place it in a corner of the garden.
To cultivate an alstromeria in a pot it is possible to buy a plant in a nursery or in a garden center and immediately put it home. We choose the universal soil that is ideal for this plant, after which we take a pot that we like and that is at least one and a half times the pot in which the plant is located. After that we begin to fill the jar by placing a 2 cm layer of expanded clay or other draining material, above which we add some soil.
After spreading this first layer of soil, we remove the alstromeria plant from its pot and place it in the new pot, taking care to place the central plant in the middle of the pot. After this we fill the pot with the soil on the sides of the earthen bread until it fills all the empty space.
At this point we take the jar on the edges with both hands and we give 2-3 adjustment strokes beating the jar on the ground, after which we compress the soil with our hands well before giving it a couple more strokes. We carefully water the pot by compacting the soil that will reduce in volume and if necessary we will add some more soil to fill any gaps.
