Grafting of fruit trees can be carried out at different times of the year. The optimal time for grafting apples and pears is spring. Many gardeners successfully complete this procedure in the winter. The fusion of the stock and the cutting will be high if the grafting is done correctly.

Features of vaccination in winter

Before proceeding with the winter grafting of fruit trees, the grafting material should be prepared. Vaccination is carried out in a comfortable environment, indoors. The best time for the procedure is December-January. Winter grafting has many advantages over budding. The procedure is performed not on the street, but while sitting at home. When carrying out winter vaccination, the eyes take root very quickly, and the eyes may simply die from frost.

If apple trees are grafted in winter, the growing period for seedlings is reduced. It is advisable to choose rootstocks from cultivated and hardy varieties of apple trees. They have a more developed root system. The rootstocks should be dug out at the end of autumn. They need to be stored in a cold room, where the temperature will be no more than 2 degrees. For storage, the rootstocks should be wrapped with fresh sawdust.

The grafting material must be prepared in advance before the onset of frost. Cutting the cuttings later does not guarantee the growth of the plant. Cuttings should be healthy and matured. Their thickness should, if possible, correspond to the diameter of the rootstock. The cuttings are kept in the same place as the rootstocks. Waterlogging must be avoided.

Grafting tools

The gardener has many tools for gardening and plant maintenance. Each procedure requires specific tools. To get vaccinated, you need the following tools:

  • Sharp knife
  • Garden saw
  • For strapping bag or tape
  • Garden var
  1. The graft is prepared from the beginning of winter, when the tree is dormant.
  2. You can cut the cuttings in early spring, before the buds swell.
  3. Branches should be chosen healthy with upward growth. Their length should be at least 30 cm. Cut off the branch at an oblique angle. Dwarf apple varieties are better suited for winter grafting.

How apple trees are grafted in winter

It is advisable to vaccinate when the plant is at rest. Many gardeners are vaccinated at the end of January. It depends on the region and weather conditions. If the winter is harsh, then the procedure should be performed at the end of winter in order to avoid large losses. With a sharp knife designed specifically for grafting, make oblique cuts on the handle and rootstock about 3 cm long. Then split the cut at a distance of 1/3 from the top with a knife. Then place the cuts to combine so that the tongue of the cut of the cutting enters the open slit of the stock. It so happens that the thickness of the rootstock is greater than the thickness of the cutting. In this case, after combining them, cut off the protrusion of the stock.

Then tie the junction of the grafting materials with a synthetic tape with a width of about 10-12 mm. Better to use PVC or plastic wrap. Then cover all open areas with garden pitch.

This method of copulation is called a buttstock with a tongue. Many growers graft the bark if the rootstock is thicker than the scion, and waxing can be done to increase the yield of the seedlings. This procedure reduces the risk of bud germination, improves the adhesion of the grafts. After grafting, dip the stalk into paraffin, preheating to a temperature of 60-70 degrees. Then take out and place horizontally in prepared bags or a box with sawdust.

Storage of grafting and planting in the ground

After the procedure, for good fusion of grafting materials for 2 weeks, they should be placed in a room where the temperature will be about 19 degrees. It is very important to withstand this period, since the survival rate and yield of seedlings depend on it. Vaccinations should be checked regularly. After this period, keep the plant for 14 days at a temperature of 5-10 degrees, and before planting in the ground at a temperature of 2-3 degrees. Store the vaccinations horizontally in a box. First, lay the film on the bottom and sprinkle the vaccinations with wet sawdust. To protect the vaccine from mice, spread the bait around the box.

Grafts are planted in the spring. The site where vaccinations will be placed must be well prepared. The soil is fertilized with compost. The grafts are planted so that the junction is flush with the soil. If the inoculation is located deeper, it will be very difficult to remove the bandage. Then the grafting of the apple tree is covered with earth, while the upper bud on the cutting must be left open.

After a month, open the vaccine and remove the bandage. The harness must not be allowed to cut into the stem. Next, the usual activities for the care of seedlings are carried out. Carrying out winter grafting of apple trees does not require a specific approach. The main thing is to observe all stages of work when performing the procedure. Growing success depends on timely and accurate work.
