Fern - Blechnum spicant

GeneralitŠ°

Genus that includes dozens of varieties of fern, widespread in most of the temperate zones of the world; Blechnum spicant is also widespread in Italy; the most cultivated species are native to Asia, and generally fear the cold, they are therefore used as houseplants. They form large roundish bushes, consisting of long, light green fronds, which appear rolled up, and develop unrolling, reaching up to 50-60 cm in length. Even if in nature there are widespread species that produce short woody stems, as houseplants, species without stems are cultivated; they are very decorative species, cultivable even in poorly lit rooms.

Exposure

To have good results in the cultivation of the Blechnum spicant fern, it is good to grow in a shady or partially shaded place; in fact these plants fear direct sunlight.
The species grown as house plants generally cannot withstand temperatures below 10-12 ° C, so they can be taken outside in the summer, while during the other months of the year they must be collected at home. The ideal temperature for this fern is around 18 ° C as in the wild the Blechnum spicant are plants that live in undergrowth environments.

Watering

These are evergreen plants that in nature develop in the moist and fresh soils of the undergrowth; for a fern plant that is always healthy and well developed regular watering is recommended, avoiding excesses that could lead to the onset of root rot; for this reason it is good to let the soil dry slightly between one watering and another. The water to be used should be limestone-free, which can lead to problems for Blechnum spicant plants.
Ferns are plants that need the right degree of humidity, so it would be good to place the vase in a saucer placed on pebbles or expanded clay, so that the roots do not remain in contact with water.
From March to October, provide fertilizer for green plants, once a month, in half the dosage recommended on the package.

Ground

For the planting of these ferns use a fairly rich, loose and soft, well-drained soil. The plants tend to spread quite quickly, producing new fronds all the time; It is therefore advisable to repot them at least every 2 years if not annually, avoiding exceeding the dimensions of the new container.
The repotting operation must be carried out at the beginning of the spring season.

Multiplication

The reproduction of these ferns to obtain new specimens takes place by division of the tufts, in autumn, or in spring you can sow the yellowish spores that are found on the lower page of the fronds, even if this type of operation is not very easy to apply independently .

Fern - Blechnum spicant: Pests and diseases

These ferns fear the cochineal, mites and aphids, even if the correctly cultivated plants are generally not attacked by parasites.
Water imbalances easily cause the fronds to dry out in the lower part, periodically it is possible to intervene by cutting the ruined fronds at the base, to favor the development of new fronds.
