Wilcoxia - Peniocereus: Generalities

Generalities: cacti originating from Mexico, this genus combines only 10-12 species. They have an erect stem, usually short and thickened, often in the shape of a caudex; at the end of the stem they produce numerous elongated branches, sometimes prostrate or creeping. In summer, at the apex of the stems, numerous elongated flowers bloom, which open at night and close again during the day, very fragrant, white, pink or red. The branches are thin, green in color, covered with spines of various shapes, sometimes rigid, sometimes similar to hairs. After the flowers the plants produce small oval fruits, which become red when ripe.
Exposure: they are cultivated in a very bright but shaded position, away from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day. They fear the cold and in winter they must be kept at a minimum temperature of 12-15 ° C:
Watering: from March to October water sporadically, when the ground is well dry; during the remaining months moisten the soil once a month. During the vegetative period mix a specific fertilizer for cactaceae with the water of the watering.
Soil: peniocereus are grown in very well drained and sandy soil; you can prepare an ideal soil by mixing a part of peat with one of lapillus and one of sand.
Multiplication: occurs by branch cuttings; in general the short swollen stem is produced only by the plants produced by seed.
Pests and diseases: they fear cochineal and mites.
