Fittonia - Fittonia verschaffeltii

Fittonia is a small evergreen tropical plant from South America. It has short fleshy stems of clear light color and numerous oval leaves, very decorative, characterized by numerous veins of contrasting color with respect to the base color of the leaf, F. argyroneura has dark green leaves and silvery white veins, F. verschaffeltii has olive green leaves and scarlet or pink veins. In spring it produces small flowers with minimal ornamental character.

Exposure



The Fittonia verschaffeltii prefers shady or semi-shady locations; in summer it can be taken outside, at the base of a tree or bush; in winter it should be kept indoors, away from heat sources and sheltered from possible drafts, in an average bright place.
In summer the ideal temperature for this plant is around 25 ° C, while in winter it does not like temperatures below 18 ° C.

Watering



The Fittonia verschaffeltii, in summer, needs abundant watering, in winter it can be reduced, avoiding however to let the soil dry too much between one watering and another; it is advisable to vaporize the plant often with distilled water, to increase the environmental humidity, throughout the year. It is however essential to check that at the base of the plant water does not form and that the soil allows proper drainage, to avoid the onset of dangerous radical rot.
In spring and summer provide fertilizer for green plants every 15-20 days with the water of the watering.

This plant with tender and fleshy leaves is often attacked by aphids and red spider mites that can cause significant damage; to eliminate these last parasites it may be sufficient to raise the level of environmental humidity, while for the aphids special insecticide products are present on the market, or, it is also possible to prepare macerated macerates based on the affected plants.
